A friend once told me that traditions are traditions because a long time ago, someone started something and just kept on doing it. Of course, anyone can create their own tradition, it's just a matter of putting a little effort into keeping it going. That's how I feel about Sunday dinner at our house. Sunday is that day that I take a more leisurely approach to cooking. It's the day that I try out new, more complicated recipes (and then try to figure out how I can do them in 20 minutes for a weeknight meal).
This afternoon both girls had their baths before naptime since we'd skipped them the night before. As a result, they both crashed for 3 hours while I cooked dinner. J. was upstairs scraping 3 layers of wallpaper off the walls in Wallie's room. The house was so quiet that I almost felt like I had it to myself.
Once the girls woke up, J. played with them for a bit while I put the finishing touches on our meal. Then, it was time for Sunday dinner, and this is what we ate:
Coq Au Vin from Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles cookbook
Except for Wallie, who had rice cereal off of J.'s finger, the only way she will eat solids:
After dinner, we shared an apple and J and I finished our wine. He played with the girls while I washed the dishes. Wallie nursed and went to bed. J. and I snuggled with Bunny for a long while. Then it was time for her to go to sleep. Later, J. and I will watch a movie and probably have a little more wine. And we will repeat everything next Sunday and the Sunday after that...
What traditions have you created for your family?
