I've decided, after listening to an Earth Day talk at hippie church, that it's the "Reduce and Reuse" part of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" trilogy that is most important for me and my family to focus on. Sure we recycle, too—like clockwork, without thinking about it—but I don't pay enough attention to reducing and reusing.
We are going to make a conscious effort to live more simply with less things. If, down the line, we are able to fulfill a dream and build a house, it will be small. And "green." The things that fill our spaces will be reused and reusable as much as possible.
Today I reflected on the small things we as a family do to try and have a smaller carbon footprint, but there is so much more we can do. For example, on my food blog, I'm blogging about how we're trying to eat locally as much as possible this week and then, hopefully, keep on doing it. I'm thinking about returning to a meat-free diet. I'm also going to call the utility company tomorrow tomorrow to find out about the city's wind energy program. Something I've been meaning to do since we moved in. You've got to start somewhere.
Finally, since we only have one car and we'd like to keep it that way, here's another thing we're doing:
Happy Earth Day! How did you spend it?
